Leveraging Waves for AI Training Traffic
Cogent's Optical Wavelength product was the ideal solution in order to support this large tech company's goal of having diverse routing to connect their four AI driven data centers.
A large tech company came to Cogent looking for a nationwide backbone solution that allowed for high-capacity connectivity for AI training traffic.
The company had four data centers across the country, one on each coast housing the training data for the AI model, and two in the Midwest housing the computing resources to train the model. The locations were geographically separated for redundancy reasons, but needed to be interconnected on a backbone that had the capacity to handle the continual large data transfers.
Cogent’s Optical Wavelength product was the ideal solution in order to connect the four data centers. Because of Cogent's extensive network footprint, we were able to present multiple routing options to the company. For this application, achieving full network diversity the primary design goal in order to maintain an uninterrupted data feed for the AI training applications.

The routes that were delivered to the customer created a 10 Terabit backbone for them from each coastal storage data center to the Midwestern computing data centers. We also delivered 10 Tbps routes to connect the two training data centers and the computing data centers, with full end-to-end diversity. This ensured continuity for the learning applications and peak efficiency for training AI models, utilizing the network backbone to its highest potential.
